Neil taught science at John Marshall, Mayo High School and St. Thomas University for a total of 44 years. During that time he coached youth hockey with Ken Johansson from 1968 to 1980; assisted Mayo high school boys hockey from 1980 to 1983; served as an assistant coach for the first Mayo high school girls hockey program from 1996 to 2006 during which time the team qualified and played in four State tournaments. He has served as the Mayo high school boys golf coach from 1966 to the present.
Neil comes from a hockey family with father, children, and grandchildren playing at the high school and college level. He continues to serve on several hockey boards. Neil's most recent awards include: 2000 Big 9 Girls Hockey Coach of the Year; 2001 Minnesota High School Assistant Hockey Coach of the Year; 2011 Minnesota High School Coaches Hall of Fame; 2013 Rochester Amateur Sports Commission Lifetime Coaching Achievement Award.
Neil has administered the RHF hockey scholarship program since 1980. During that time over 300 Rochester high school hockey players have received scholarships.
